Make the Most of Summer: Fun Family Activities for You and Your Child in the Final Weeks

Two kids and an adult outside playing catch

It's already August, and with just a little over a month of “official” summer left, the season is quickly winding down here in Calgary. School starts in September, and temperatures will soon drop, making outdoor activities less appealing. But don't worry; there's still plenty of time to enjoy the summer days. Here are some activities you can share with your child:

Outdoor Play

Lawn bowling, bocce ball, croquet, frisbee, baseball, football, soccer, and more—try a new outdoor game or break out the old reliable ball!

Calgary offers a variety of natural spots where you can escape the stuffy house and enjoy the summer heat with your kids. Or maybe your kids would love to run around and explore a new playground.

Visit The City of Calgary’s website to discover all the amazing public resources available and start making the most of them!

Soak Your Head

You might want to cool off after engaging in some physical activity outside in the heat. Although we're a landlocked province in western Canada, and our options for bodies of water are limited, you can still cool off with a soak.

There are many perfect spots along the Bow and Elbow Rivers where you can enjoy the water to beat the heat: River Access

If you crave the outdoors but still want the benefits of a pool, try one of Calgary’s outdoor pools, spray parks, or wading pools: Outdoor Pools & Spray Parks

CPL Reading Challenge

We mentioned the Calgary Public Library’s reading challenge in our Calgary Kids’ Summer Adventures blog, but it’s worth mentioning again! The Ultimate Summer Reading Challenge runs until August 31st. Track your reading and challenge the whole family to see who can read the most!

To sign up for the Ultimate Summer Reading Challenge, you'll need a CPL membership, which is free. Not only do you get access to the summer reading challenge, but you can also borrow a wide variety of books! So, check out some books and share the reading experience with your children.

Start a Journal

Starting a journal may not be exclusively a summer activity, but there’s no better time than now to begin writing. You can jot down your daily activities, thoughts, feelings, or even random ideas. It’s also a great way to practice writing and improve your penmanship.

If you are interested in summer activities for your kids, check out our Program Calendar to see the full range of programs we offer for families and adults, and what’s coming up.
