Story Time with Calgary Police: A Year-End Celebration Full of Curiosity and Fun

Police Constable Chad reading The Cat in the Hat

At the end of November, we love hosting a special year-end event for kids in Calgary. This year, we partnered with the City of Calgary, the Manchester Community Space, and the kids of the Homework Club to create a memorable experience: Story Time with the Calgary Police which was A Year-End Celebration Full of Curiosity and Fun!

On November 26th, Constables Simon and Chad from the Calgary Police Service visited the Homework Club for an afternoon of learning and fun. They began the event by reading the classic The Cat in the Hat, captivating the kids with their storytelling skills.

After the reading, Constables Simon and Chad shared what it’s like to be a police officer. They gave the kids an up-close look at some of their essential tools, including their radios for staying connected, bright flashlights, and their most important tool: their voices.

Sparking Curiosity: A Q&A Session Full of Learning

The highlight of the event was the lively question-and-answer session. What began with questions about why the constables chose to become police officers quickly expanded to cover a variety of topics, including:

  • How to become a police officer.

  • The different roles within the police force.

  • Safety tips for kids.

  • How and when to call 911.

  • Hypothetical scenarios and ways to stay safe in tricky situations.

The kids were so enthusiastic and full of curiosity that the Q&A continued until the very end of the program, leaving no time for planned activities. The officers happily answered every question, ensuring the kids left with new knowledge and insights.

Taking the Fun Home

As the event wrapped up, each child was invited to take home one or two books along with paints and canvases to inspire creativity. We hope the kids enjoyed their time with Constables Simon and Chad!

A big thank you to the City of Calgary, Manchester Community Space, the Calgary Police Service, and the Homework Club for making this event possible.
