5 Free(ish) Winter Activities In and Around Calgary

To help keep the good times rolling this winter season, we compiled some ideas for the next couple months. Most of these ideas will be free to do and offer great outdoor experiences!

Bowness Park

Bowness Park is a great destination for the family. Between picnic benches, ice rinks, walking paths, fire pits, and BBQ stands — this park has a lot to offer. More importantly, this year they’re offering an Ice Skate Trail and new Ice Bikes for rent. Currently, there are COVID-restrictions; however please check out the website for more details.

Tobogganing or Sledding

Tobogganing or sledding is a great physical activity. Calgary has many locations to offer, so check out the website for dedicated hills near you. Happy sliding!

Ice Skating

Grab a pair of skates and take to the ice. Calgary has many outdoor rinks for the public and are free to use. Skates can be expensive, but feel free to check out second hand or thrift stores like Play It Again Sports, Value Village, and United Way. Check out Calgary's website for public outdoor rinks near you.

Calgary Zoo Lights

The Zoolights are a festive and a beautiful display of lights. This event is running until January 10, 2021 and times are 5 to 9 PM. The tickets are pricy; however, there’s an incentive for low-income families. Please follow this link for an application, where you can receive a reduced rate for this show! The application is highly recommended because it offers the Fee Assistance and once approved can aid in all Calgary facilities for families.

Hiking

Despite being in the city, there are beautiful parks and trails for hiking. Take in the scenery and also enjoy the leisure of being with your family outside. Check out the top 10 inner-city trails in Calgary.
